Influenced by books such as ‘How
To Paint Water Colours’ and ‘Vision
Design’ by Roger Fry, Gade submitted
two paintings to a national exhibition
in Nagpur in 1946. His portrayal of an
old man with a flowing white beard
won a prize, leading him to enroll as a
student at the Nagpur School of Art. He
obtained a Diploma in Art in 1949 and
later pursued a master’s degree in 1950.
During this period, Gade crossed paths
with artist S H Raza, whose watercolours
resonated with the style of their mentor,
Walter Langhammer, an art critic at
‘The Times of India.’ Raza provided
valuable guidance on landscape
painting, inspiring Gade to transition from
watercolours to oils on canvas. Utilizing
both palette knife and brush techniques,
Gade developed his distinctive approach
to artistic expression.
