The series of portraits made by the artist
chronicled the lives of the people that
influenced him, be they his immediate
family members, friends, fellow artists
and contemporaries. They also include
commissioned portraits of politicians,
statesmen and patrons whom he
portrayed in varying styles, tones
and moods. He portrayed them with
compassion in an elegant and dignified
manner which is a revered legacy
of Mr. Hebbar’s persona as an artist.
Born in Karnataka in 1911, K K Hebbar belongs
to a rare league of artists whose works
defied categorization and re-defined the
course of modernism in India. He moved to
Mumbai from Karnataka and pursued his
formal art training from the Sir J J School of
Art, where he spent five years as a teacher
and mentor from 1940-1945, and later
moved to Academy Julien in Paris.
