COMPARABLE
Hari Ambadas Gade is recognized as one of the pioneers
of abstract expressionist painting in post-independence
India. As a key figure in the progressive art movement
of the country, he embraced an unconventional and
dynamic artistic approach. Alongside fellow members
of the Progressive Artists Group, Gade rebelled
against the constraints of academic art imposed by
the British education system on Indian art education.
Born in Amravati in 1917, Gade earned a degree in
science from the University of Nagpur, Maharashtra, in
1938. Despite his early passion for drawing, he pursued
science and mathematics, obtaining a master’s degree.
Faced with unemployment, Gade took up a teaching UNTITLED
position, and it was during his time in Jabalpur for his 29 x 26.5 in (73.7 x 67.3 cm)
Bachelor of Educator examinations that he discovered Oil on canvas
