In the 1990s, due to the unavailability of natural
fibres, Mukherjee abandoned her fibre works
and focused on various other mediums. She
started by exploring ceramics ranging from pots
to platter-shaped works to idol-like figures. She
then began bronze casting in the 2000s, likely Cover and page of the publication.
inspired by her own mother’s work, who was
a prolific sculptor. These works were executed
using the lost-wax process. Here, she would
depict one of her enduring influences - nature
and its energies. These organic sculptures
depict abstracted forms of plant life, exploring
both stasis and growth, decomposition and
birth, all at once. The membranes and patterns
evident in the sculptures come from the kilns in
which the bronze is cast. The creatureque forms
are bursting with life and display a sense of
movement and evolution.
