A multifaceted artist who embraces varied
 mediums, including painting, sculpture, video,
 photography, and even telescopes, Jitish
Kallat delves into themes encompassing our
modern era, the cosmic realm, and historical
 remembrance. His extensive narratives, enriched
with personal, political, and artistic allusions,
 reflect an ever-evolving India.
 Kallat’s creations frequently traverse different
 scales, oscillating between contemplations of
the individual, urban streets, the nation, and the
cosmic expanse. This allows him to scrutinize
the fleeting versus eternal, the commonplace
in relation to history, and the microscopic
juxtaposition with the telescopic. Notably, some
of his most remarkable works pay homage to
his hometown, Mumbai. During his early career,
he derived inspiration from billboards and
Mumbai’s pervasive advertising culture, as well
as the socio-economic and political currents
permeating the city. Kallat’s oeuvre can be
perceived as a constant interplay between his
perspectives on self, city, and nation.

Jitish Kallat was born in 1974 and earned his BFA
in painting from Mumbai’s Sir JJ School of Art in
1996. Following this achievement, he promptly
held his inaugural solo exhibition at Chemould
Prescott Road and Prithvi Gallery. His solo
 exhibitions have graced esteemed institutions,
including the Art Institute of Chicago, Bhau
Daji Lad Museum, Potter Museum of Art in
Melbourne, CSMVS Museum in Mumbai, the San
Jose Museum of Art, and the Art Gallery of New
 South Wales in Sydney.

Notably, Kallat assumed the role of curator and
artistic director for the Kochi-Muziris Biennale
in 2014. He also took on the curatorship of the
ongoing exhibition titled “I draw, therefore I
think” for the SouthSouth Platform in 2021.
