Born in Nagpur in 1980, Valay Shende is an
eminent sculptor and video artist who has made
an indelible mark in contemporary Indian art. He
gained a Diploma in Art Education in 2000 in
Nagpur and went on to receive a BFA in Sculpture
from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 2004.
In 2006, he was part of an artist residency at the
Open Air Program, Point Ephemere, Paris. He is
endlessly inspired by his surroundings, nature
and the plight of the members of today’s highly
urbanised society, especially migrant workers.
Utilising both video and sculpture, he often creates
visually appealing installations that are not only
one-of-a-kind but also challenge the idea of what
a sculpture represents and the rendering process
associated with creating one. His works have been
lauded around the world, with exhibitions being
held in India, China, Abu Dhabi, Korea, France, the
Side view USA and Germany, among others.
