                                                                     Renowned   contemporary  artist  Chittrovanu
                                                                     Mazumdar was born in Paris in 1965 to French mother
                                                                     Marguerite and artist father Nirode Mazumdar, who
                                                                     co-founded the Calcutta Group. He spent most of
                                                                     his childhood in the heart of rural Kolkata and grew
                                                                     up surrounded by art. He went on to study at the
                                                                     Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata and
                                                                     graduated First Class in Painting in 1981.

                                                                     He is best known for works that amalgamate
                                                                     symbolism and postcolonial discourse. Featuring
                                                                     bold strokes and figurative collages, his works are
                                                                     raw and expressionistic. His creative figuration can
                                                                     be seen throughout his oeuvre, which possesses a
                                                                     dramatic and enigmatic quality. His works are rich
                                                                     in symbolism, eliciting an emotional response from
                                                                     viewers.  Mazumdar’s  command  over  colours  and
                                                                     his creation of form are the pillars of his vast oeuvre.
                                                                     He also practises in sculpture and mixed media
                                                                     installation, using a diverse variety of mediums,
                                                                     including rubber, tar, engine  oil, wood, gold, and
                                                                     textile, among others. In the past, he has also
                                                                     designed performance spaces and books.
                                                                     Mazumdar  has  exhibited  his  works  throughout
                                                                     the country and the world, including cities such
                                                                     as New York, Rome, Paris, Dubai and Salzburg. His
                                                                     works are also part of several important permanent
                                                                     collections, including the Seagull Foundation,
                                                                     Kolkata and NGMA, New Delhi. The artist currently
                                                                     lives and works in Kolkata.
