Renowned contemporary artist Chittrovanu
Mazumdar was born in Paris in 1965 to French mother
Marguerite and artist father Nirode Mazumdar, who
co-founded the Calcutta Group. He spent most of
his childhood in the heart of rural Kolkata and grew
up surrounded by art. He went on to study at the
Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata and
graduated First Class in Painting in 1981.
He is best known for works that amalgamate
symbolism and postcolonial discourse. Featuring
bold strokes and figurative collages, his works are
raw and expressionistic. His creative figuration can
be seen throughout his oeuvre, which possesses a
dramatic and enigmatic quality. His works are rich
in symbolism, eliciting an emotional response from
viewers. Mazumdar’s command over colours and
his creation of form are the pillars of his vast oeuvre.
He also practises in sculpture and mixed media
installation, using a diverse variety of mediums,
including rubber, tar, engine oil, wood, gold, and
textile, among others. In the past, he has also
designed performance spaces and books.
Mazumdar has exhibited his works throughout
the country and the world, including cities such
as New York, Rome, Paris, Dubai and Salzburg. His
works are also part of several important permanent
collections, including the Seagull Foundation,
Kolkata and NGMA, New Delhi. The artist currently
lives and works in Kolkata.
