Valay Shende tends to use non-traditional
materials like pocket watches, fibreglass and
circular metal discs, however, his signature
medium to create his impressive sculptures is
stainless steel discs. Growing up in Nagpur, he
was surrounded by various metals owing to
his father’s profession, who was a scrap metal
merchant. The usage of circular discs was also
inspired by the artist’s deep interest in nature
and science. This led to the understanding
that breaking down the creations of nature all
matter is created through atoms and molecules
collaborating. In a similar manner, he activates
and interconnects the discs to create his works.
His keen observation skills are reflected in his
renditions of various objects, people he sees
in daily life, vehicles and symbols. The artist’s
public installation, ‘Dabbawala’ at the Haji Ali
junction in Mumbai, is a perfect example of his
preoccupation with creating sculptures that pay
homage to the trials, tribulations and victories of
people one crosses paths with every day.
